More Raw Dairies Under Attack
Wednesday, December 14th, 2011Mary and Bart Hill own M & B Fairview Farm in Hamburg, PA. For the last five years, they have provided delicious, nutritious raw milk from their gentle, friendly Jerseys….But all of that changed over night for them recently during some heavy rains that hit our area. State inspectors came out during the worst of the flooding, and cited them for all of the mud and dirt…They have been given until January to make thousands of dollars worth of changes and upgrades…Pennsylvania is only one of a handful of states in which raw milk is perfectly legal, but that status is tenuous at best and subject to change with the prevailing political winds and the pressures from federal agencies…Read the entire article
YorIt Social Venture Challenge
Wednesday, December 7th, 2011I propose that a group, or groups, such as Buy Fresh Buy Local (BFBL) or Food Availability Task Force (FATF) work together and apply for $20,000 available from the YorIt Social Venture Challenge. (This is the local philanthropic group of young people who gave the Healthy World Cafe $20,000 last year.) I can’t think of anything more important to restoring balance to our community than helping people become better nourished. Of course we know that we need nourishment for every aspect of our multi-faceted existence, but in this instance, the focus would be on physical nourishment. If there is interest in pursuing this opportunity, we’ll need to move on it fairly quickly. The “lifeline” for applying is February 3, 2012. The “application” is a 5 minute video pitching our project. Log onto YorIt.org to learn more. I think step one would be to create a team of folks who feel we should at least brainstorm the possibilities. Leada Dietz has graciously offered to handle the email communication of this proposal. Thanks so much for prayerfully considering whether you’re called to be part of this potentially community transforming effort. If you feel called to play any part in this effort, please contact Leada Dietz at LeadaDietz@epix.net. ~ Willa
